2018- 2019 DAL Workshops

Carolyn McDaniel is Vice President for Programs and the coordinator for the 2018-2019 workshops. This season's workshops include Howard Rees Oil Painting with Howard Rees September 29, 30 and October 1. On January 5, Frances Nichols will conduct a Pastel workshop with a watercolor underpainting. On March 4, Frances Nichols will conduct a workshop on linoleum carving and watercolor highlighting the print. On March 30th Debra Newton will condat pastel workshop. May 6th, 7th, and 8th workshop is with Bruce Robertson and Shelley Redford-Young, (Figures and People in watercolor).

Workshops Fees

Per the DAL bylaws all Workshop Fees are due to the coordinator 30 days prior to the class. Non DAL Members will be assessed an additional $10 per day. If a payment is not received on time, that slot can be given to a new participant. We have to meet a pre-negotiated minimum number of students to conduct these workshops. Workshop fees can not be refunded if you are not able to make it. Let Carolyn McDaniel know as soon as you know you can’t come in case we have a waiting list. 

Workshops' Location

The Howard Rees workshop will be held at Lois Hinman’s studio on 2131 Las Flores. All other workshops will be held at the Church of The Nazarene, 571 N. Norma, R/C.

OIL PAINTING With HOWARD REES - September 29, 30, and October 1, 2018

From 9AM to 4PM. You can take one, two or all three days. Contact Carolyn for the supply list when you sign up. DAL has some oil paint to share. Cost: $90.00/day for members $100.00/day for non-members. Note workshop location is Lois Hinman’s Studio.

2019 Spring Workshops

PASTEL WORKSHOP with FRANCES NICHOLS on Saturday January 5

from 9AM to 4PM. Fran presented this workshop previously to great acclaim. She does an underpainting with watercolor, before applying the pastel pigments. Bring the watercolor supplies and pastels you have. Cost: $25.00 members, $35.00 for non-members.

LINOLEUM BLOCK CARVING with FRANCES NICHOLS on Tuesday March 5

From 9AM to 4PM. After the blocks are carved and printed, you can highlight the prints with watercolor. Cost: $25.00 members, $35.00 non-members

PASTEL WORKSHOP with DEBRA NEWTON on March 30 from 9am to 4pm

Debra Newton will lead a one day Pastel workshop using black canson paper, without a watercolor underpainting. Students will complete a still life and one other paint tbd. $35 for members and $45 for non members. Paper and pastels and a list of other supplies attendees will need to bring will be provided.




 

LIGHT AND LIFE: PAINTING THE FIGURE IN WATERCOLOR on Tuesday May 7 and Wednesday May 8, from 9am to 4pm at Nazarene church.

This workshop will focus on painting the candid moments of life in scenes. We will work from a live model the first day to capture gesture and discuss drapery folds and the movement of fabric. We will also work from photo reference for finished works on the second day. We will do a Monday nightlecture and demonstration before the workshop begins on Tuesday morning.

Bruce is the director and a teacher at Visual Art Institute in SLC, UT. His emphasis is in mixed media painting, and his talents include drawing, printmaking and more. He has taught at the university level for over 26 years and been at VAI since 1995. Shelley is a teacher at VAI and began her art employment at OC Tanners in UT where she learned emblematic jewelry design and air brush rendering. She ran an art school for youth called IDIZ. Her focus is in portrait and figurative drawing and painting, landscapes and still life. Among other academic experiences she has also studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where she learned old masters tec">hniques of sight-size drawing and painting using north light. http://www.visualartinstitute.org/redford-young.html
