2017- 2018 DAL Workshops

Holly Godard is program coordinator for the 2017-2018 DAL workshops. To sign up for a workshop or find out availability and prices, contact Holly. This season's workshops include Nov. 7th workshop with Kathleen Scoggin, (acrylic and abstract), March 5th workshop with Debbie Newton, (watercolor and pastels), April 3rd and 4th workshop with Colleen Reynolds,(watercolor and big sky) and May 8th and 9th workshop with Bruce Robertson and Shelley Redford-Young, (portraits in watercolor).

Workshops Fees

Per the DAL bylaws all Workshop Fees are due to the coordinator 30 days prior to the class. Non DAL Members will be assessed an additional $10 per day. If a payment is not received on time, that slot can be given to a new participant. We have to meet a pre-negotiated minimum number of students to conduct these workshops. Workshop fees can not be refunded if you are not able to make it. Let Holly know as soon as you know you can’t come in case we have a waiting list.

WATERCOLOR CLASS by Nancy Crawford
Every Tuesday 8 am - 12 pm at Crossroad Community Church. $10 for class. This class is not offered during the summer. Contact Nancy at 760-375-8275 for more information.

2017 Winter Workshops

November 7, 2017: Kathleen Scoggin "Fun With Acrylics" Abstract Workshop

Kathleen will help us with design and working with acrylics to create abstracted paintings. You may paint more realistic if you wish. You will learn different approaches to using acrylics, including layering, glazing and using transparent and opaque paints to create hard and soft edges.

January 8, 2018: Debbie Newton Pastel and Watercolor Workshop

Desert Artists' League will be hosting a Pastel and Watercolor workshop with Debbie Newton. Debbie will show us how to combine pastel and watercolor to create works with depth and vibrancy. She will be the guest speaker for the March DAL meeting. Although she considers herself a novice, she has been learning this medium since Fran Nichols did her presentation and workshop last year. Debbie attended the Plein Air Convention and Expo in San Diego where she was able to attend two pastel sessions with well-known pastel artists, Marla Baggetta and Brenda Boylan. In addition, she has watched many YouTube videos and has purchased a few DVD’s by Richard McKinlery, Aaron Scherr and Johanenes Vloothuis, in her pursuit to learn more of this mixed media concept.

2018 Spring Workshops

April 3 & 4, 2018: Colleen Reynolds “Big Sky” Watercolor Workshop

Desert Artists' League will be hosting a watercolor class with Colleen Reynolds. Colleen Reynolds is a versatile painter who marvels in capturing the emotion and soul of the every day. Her work reflects many years of taking notice of all things living; including portraits, pets and plants. Colleen’s representational paintings have a loose and textural quality, full of contrast and vibrant color. Her characteristic subject cropping grasps the viewers’ attention and draws them in to study the message or story behind the work.
Colleen does business as an artist and writer through her company, CRB Endeavors. She has a Masters degree in Education and Bachelor degrees in Fine Art and Applied Mathematics. In previous lives, Colleen completed a 20-year U.S. Navy career and taught corporate, college and university courses. She has recently moved from Utah to Carson City, NV.

May 8 & 9, 2018: Bruce Robertson and Shelley Redford-Young "Visual Vibrations in Portraits" Watercolor Workshop

We get a very exciting and unique experience this month as we welcome Bruce Robertson and Shelley Redford Young, (from SLC, UT). They will demonstrate the exploration of color and value in portraiture by working from black and white photo references. They will begin with simple drawing techniques of blind line and then paint the basic structure of the planes of the head to anchor down knowledge of how light and shadows fall over the form of the face, using watercolors.
Both of these accomplished artists will also be teaching a “Visual Vibrations Portrait Watercolor Workshop”, May 8-9, 2018. Gain new skills and confidence in painting watercolor portraits with this workshop! See more information about this workshop above. Bruce is the director and a teacher at Visual Art Institute in SLC, UT. His emphasis is in mixed media painting, and his talents include drawing, printmaking and more. He has taught at the university level for over 26 years and been at VAI since 1995. Shelley is a teacher at VAI and began her art employment at OC Tanners in UT where she learned emblematic jewelry design and air brush rendering. She ran an art school for youth called IDIZ. Her focus is in portrait and figurative drawing and painting, landscapes and still life. Among other academic experiences she has also studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy, where she learned old masters techniques of sight-size drawing and painting using North light. http://www.visualartinstitute.org/redford-young.html

DAL 2017 - 2018 Program speaker / demonstrator

SEPTEMBER 11 MEETING PROGRAM. Lorie Witt and Chandra Putnam, who got the "Ridgecrest, CA. Rocks" Facebook page started will come talk briefly about how their group came about and what kinds of activities they have had and hope to have in the future. Painting rocks has become a national phenomenon and their Facebook page has acquired over 6500 members in less than 6 months. The premise is to paint rocks with pretty much anything you want and leave them as treasures around town for others to find. It is a wonderful way to bring families and communities together and inspires creativity. Member Lonnie Cornwell said, “Painting rocks is such a lovely pastime. It’s non-threatening and stress free. It’s a great way to work on our painting skills and spread a little joy into the world.” https://www.facebook.com/groups/833396000145767/

OCTOBER 2 MEETING PROGRAM. Desert Artists League is 60 years old! Come help celebrate our anniversary! Several board members will be doing mini demos. Everyone is encouraged to bring a piece of work they did in their early days and something more current so we can see how far you have come. If you have artwork from members who may no longer be with us, bring that to share. It will be nice to remember and honor those who came before us.

NOVEMBER 6 MEETING PROGRAM. Kathleen Scoggin will demonstrate using acrylic paints in abstract art. She will share tips and techniques for using acrylic paint to create abstract art, but you can also utilize the things you learn in more realistic art too. She will also be our guest artist for the Nov. 7th workshop called "Fun With Acrylics". It will be a lesson in creating abstract art with acrylics. Kathleen says, "I am a water-media artist painting in the Southern California desert. My main subject is nature, done in both realistic and abstracted style. Mediums include watercolor, acrylic and mixed media. I also paint commissioned portraits of dogs and cats of all breeds." Kathleen currently resides in Indio, CA. DECEMBER 8 MEETING MEETING PROGRAM. Annual Christmas Gathering and Potluck Dec 11th. If you haven’t yet signed up to bring anything, call Holly Godard. (801) 597-3130. DAL will provide ham, paper goods and pop. 

JANUARY 8 MEETING MEETING PROGRAM. Debbie Newton, (DAL member) will be teaching a “Watercolor with Pastels” workshop from 9am to 4pm and then doing a demonstration for the DAL meeting at 6:30pm. She will be talking about painting from photos in any medium and do a demo in pastel for the evening meeting. Debbie considers herself a novice, but she was very inspired by Fran Nichols’ popular watercolor and pastel workshop and has been teaching herself more about this technique from various media sources. Those of us who have seen her paint know she is more than a novice, she is a talented artist! Debbie will share what she has learned, using watercolor wash and pastels together to create depth and texture. Be sure to sign up early for this workshop!

THE FEBRUARY 5 MEETING PROGRAM. Lois Hinman, (DAL member), our talented ceramics/pottery expert, will come demonstrate a new French technique of building sculptures that she and her students have recently learned. Lois opened her successful pottery business in 1979, teaches ceramics classes and is involved with the Maturango Museum and their Gallery Committee. Lois says, her "love of texture, color and light are always present, whether it is in a landscape, a still life, a large floor vessel or a simple coffee mug." MARCH 5 MEETING PROGRAM: Beth Allen, of Inyokern is a talented oil artist whose beautiful landscapes and western scenes can be seen at Inyo Dreams in Inyokern. She will be talking to us about some oil painting basics and the different styles of oil painting. She has studied with studied with Fredrick Taubes, European portrait artist also counseled by Walter Foster of the Foster Art Books, Anaheim,Ca.

APRIL 2 MEETING PROGRAM: Colleen Reynolds will demonstrate her representational style of painting with watercolors at our meeting and she will be teaching the “Painting the Big Sky Watercolor Workshop” on April 3-4, 2018. She is an accomplished, versatile watercolor artist whose representational paintings have a loose and textural quality. Her watercolors draw you in and make you wonder about the story or message within. Colleen works in virtually all media although watercolor captures her attention most. Come learn Colleen's "secrets" for fresh, clean color and painting in a loose and creative style
She recently moved from Utah to Carson City. She fits right in here with her former 20 year U.S. Navy career. She has taught corporate, college and university courses.
