Artist Statement:
Debbie Newton has been painting for over 30 years but feels her art significantly improved after she retired from her job as an analyst for the Department of Defense in 2010. Retirement allowed her to focus on her art and to paint daily. She began her artistic endeavors as an oil painter, then added watercolor and has found her true love in pastels. One class through her local Artists League and there was no turning back. Although she does still work in both oil and watercolor, teaching a summer session of watercolor classes, she still prefers pastel. Her subject matter includes, traditional landscape, seascape, floral, and still life but her favorite subjects are animals, mainly birds, with a bug or two thrown in occasionally. She lives in the Southern California desert, approximately 100 miles from Death Valley. As she likes to say it’s either too hot, too cold, or too windy, so she mainly works in her studio using photos from her travels, including trips to Africa, England, Southern France, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii and most of the rest of the USA. She also works from the wealth of copy right free reference photos available on the internet. She is amazed at the generosity of photographers around the world who share the most unbelievably photos for artists to use as reference. Commission work is always welcome so if you have a pet or a favorite photo that you would like turned into a painting, please contact her.
